High-Scoring Thrillers and Blowouts: Recapping a Big Day of NBA Action
Punters were spoiled for choice today, with a full slate of NBA games delivering just about every type of result you could imagine – from monster individual efforts and huge blowouts to tight finishes that went down to the wire.
The Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz combined for 258 points in a free-flowing shootout, the Boston Celtics lit it up in Atlanta behind a dominant night from Jaylen Brown, while Phoenix edged New York in a gritty road win. Detroit smashed Indiana in one of the biggest margins of the day, San Antonio survived a late Minnesota comeback in a 126–123 classic, and Miami’s balanced effort was just enough to hold off Oklahoma City. Golden State put on an offensive clinic at home to blow past Charlotte, Denver relied on Jamal Murray’s 42-point explosion to get past Washington, and the Lakers’ depth overwhelmed Portland in a high-octane win.
Below is a breakdown of each matchup, focusing on final scores and the key statistical performances taken directly from today’s box scores.
Utah Jazz vs Dallas Mavericks
Dallas outgunned Utah in a pure shootout, winning 138–120. The Mavericks set the tone early, dropping 42 points in the first quarter to lead 42–29, and they never really looked back. Utah’s offence kept the scoreboard ticking – particularly in the third where both sides scored 35 – but Dallas’ consistency across all four quarters was the difference.
It was a genuinely balanced scoring night for the Mavs. Three players cracked 20 points: Klay Thompson and Brandon Williams both finished with 22–23 points (23 for Thompson, 22 for Williams), while Max Christie also poured in 22 points. Christie stuffed the stat sheet with a 28 PRA (points + rebounds + assists) line, backed by 24 PR and 6 assists, highlighting just how involved he was in everything.
Brandon Williams was one of Dallas’ most complete contributors with 22 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists, giving him a team-high 31 PRA. Up front, Dwight Powell added 10 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists for 21 PRA, while Moussa Cisse put together a bruising performance on the glass with 10 rebounds, 9 points and 19 PRA.
Naji Marshall did a bit of everything for the home side, finishing with 16 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists (27 PRA), while Klay Thompson combined his 23 points with 3 rebounds and 3 assists (26 PRA). Thompson also hit 6 three-pointers and came up with 2 blocks, showing he’s still an impact player on both ends.
Utah’s standout was Keyonte George, who torched the Mavs for 29 points and added 7 rebounds and 6 assists, good for a team-high 36 PRA. Brice Sensabaugh chipped in 25 points, 6 boards and 2 assists (33 PRA), while versatile big Kyle Filipowski delivered 13 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists (30 PRA).
In the end, Dallas’ depth – with six players in double figures and big contributions across points, boards and playmaking – was simply too much for Utah’s stars, despite strong efforts from George and Sensabaugh.
Boston Celtics vs Atlanta Hawks
Boston dominated this one from the second quarter onwards, cruising to a 132–106 win over Atlanta. After leading 30–23 at quarter time, the Celtics exploded with a 52-point second quarter to take an 82–51 advantage into the break, effectively ending the contest.
Jaylen Brown was on another level. He poured in 41 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 2 assists for 49 PRA and 47 PR. He was everywhere offensively and added 2 steals and a block (3 steals/blocks combined), doing damage inside and out with 2 made threes.
Brown had serious shooting help from Sam Hauser, who dropped 30 points and hit an incredible 10 three-pointers. Hauser also contributed 6 rebounds and 3 assists (39 PRA and 36 PR), making him Boston’s lethal floor spacer all night.
Derrick White quietly posted an elite all-round line: 7 points, 5 rebounds, 12 assists and 4 steals + 1 block. He finished with 24 PRA, 17 RA and 5 stocks (steals+blocks), running the offence and anchoring the perimeter defence.
For the Hawks, Onyeka Okongwu was their best performer with 21 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists (31 PRA, 28 PR) and 1 steal. Wing pair Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Corey Kispert chipped in strongly – Alexander-Walker posted 18 points, 2 boards and 6 assists (26 PRA), while Kispert added 16 points, 7 rebounds and 1 assist (24 PRA).
But Atlanta simply couldn’t keep pace with Boston’s three-point barrage (particularly in the second quarter) and Brown’s star turn. The Celtics controlled the glass, moved the ball better, and turned a strong start into a comprehensive road win.
Phoenix Suns vs New York Knicks
Phoenix ground out a tough road victory at Madison Square Garden, edging the Knicks 106–99. New York led 27–19 after the first quarter and took a one-point edge (56–55) into half-time, but Phoenix flipped the script in the second half, winning those 51–43 to close out the game.
Devin Booker powered the Suns with 27 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists, good for 35 PRA and 31 PR. He also contributed 1 steal and 1 made three, steadying the offence whenever New York threatened to swing momentum.
Big man Mark Williams had a huge two-way outing: 14 points, 9 rebounds and 1 assist (24 PRA, 23 PR), plus 1 steal and 1 block. On the perimeter, Grayson Allen and Royce O’Neale both stepped up – Allen finished with 16 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists (19 PRA, 16 PR) and hit 4 threes, while O’Neale added 10 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists (17 PRA, 15 PR) and knocked down 2 triples.
Off the bench, Jordan Goodwin delivered 13 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists (19 PRA, 16 PR), and Collin Gillespie chipped in 11 points, 3 boards and 6 assists (20 PRA).
For the Knicks, it was all about their frontcourt. Karl-Anthony Towns produced a big line with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists for 36 PRA and 34 PR. OG Anunoby matched his energy with 21 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists (34 PRA, 29 PR), while also contributing 3 steals and 1 block for 4 stocks.
Miles McBride gave New York another scoring punch with 23 points, 2 rebounds and 5 assists (30 PRA, 25 PR) and hit 5 three-pointers. Despite New York’s stars stuffing the stat sheet, Phoenix’s deeper spread of contributors and superior second-half defence proved decisive.
Indiana Pacers vs Detroit Pistons
Detroit absolutely dismantled Indiana, running away with a 121–78 home win. The Pistons led 31–11 after the first quarter, 59–25 at half-time, and never let the Pacers back in, winning every quarter comfortably in a true four-quarter performance.
The Pistons had contributions from everywhere. Jalen Duren anchored the paint with 15 points and 8 rebounds, plus 4 assists, giving him 27 PRA and 23 PR. Cade Cunningham did a bit of everything with 16 points, 3 boards and 5 assists (24 PRA, 19 PR), while Duncan Robinson provided perimeter firepower with 16 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists (20 PRA) and 4 made threes.
Up front, Donovan Clingan hammered home Detroit’s dominance with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists for 20 PR and a huge 33 PRA. Wing Javonte Green was superb as well: 16 points, 3 rebounds and 0 assists (19 PRA, 19 PR), adding 4 steals/blocks combined and hitting 4 three-pointers.
Indiana never really got going offensively, with no individual stat lines in the JSON reaching close to Detroit’s top-end output. The Pistons dominated the boards, shared the scoring load and simply overwhelmed the Pacers on both ends for one of the most convincing victories of the day.
Minnesota Timberwolves vs San Antonio Spurs
This was arguably the game of the day. San Antonio held off a furious second-half comeback from Minnesota to win 126–123. The Spurs exploded in the second quarter, outscoring the Wolves 48–22 to lead 69–44 at half-time. Minnesota roared back with 40 points in the third and 39 in the fourth, but fell just short.
For the Spurs, two players stood out. Victor Wembanyama was dominant with 39 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists, tallying a massive 51 PRA and 48 PR. He added 2 steals and 2 blocks, hit 4 threes, and was the clear focal point on both ends. De’Aaron Fox supported him brilliantly, finishing with 25 points, 3 rebounds and 12 assists (40 PRA, 28 PR), plus 1 steal and 1 block.
Keldon Johnson gave the Spurs a third major scoring outlet with 20 points, 1 rebound and 2 assists (23 PRA, 21 PR), and hit 3 three-pointers. Veteran big Luke Kornet chipped in 8 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists (16 PRA), and their role players did just enough to fend off Minnesota’s charge.
On the Timberwolves’ side, Anthony Edwards had a monstrous night. He erupted for 55 points, added 4 rebounds and 3 assists for 62 PRA and 59 PR, and buried 9 triples. It was a superstar performance that nearly dragged Minnesota to an incredible comeback.
Jaden McDaniels backed him up with 23 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists (33 PRA, 28 PR), and Julius Randle added 17 points, 10 boards and 1 assist (28 PRA, 27 PR) as part of a strong frontcourt effort. But despite a 79–57 second-half edge, Minnesota’s poor second quarter left them with just too much to do.
For bettors, this one was a lesson in live momentum swings – huge first-half Spurs value flipped on its head as the Wolves stormed back, but San Antonio’s early cushion and Wembanyama’s all-round dominance held up.
Oklahoma City Thunder vs Miami Heat
Miami edged out Oklahoma City in a tight contest, winning 122–120. The Thunder came out firing with a 37–30 first quarter and led 65–60 at the half, but Miami controlled the second half 62–55, doing just enough in the final minutes to secure the win.
For the Heat, it was a genuinely team-oriented performance. Bam Adebayo was the standout with 30 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists, finishing with a massive 46 PRA and 42 PR, plus 1 steal and an eye-catching 6 made threes. That kind of inside-out threat completely changed the way OKC had to defend.
Norman Powell added important scoring and playmaking: 19 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists (27 PRA, 23 PR) and 5 threes. Pelle Larsson and Simone Fontecchio were both highly effective as well – Larsson contributed 16 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists (21 PRA, 19 PR), while Fontecchio posted 13 points, 5 boards and 3 assists (21 PRA, 18 PR).
Young guard Kasparas Jakucionis quietly put together 3 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists (15 PRA), and Myron Gardner added 11 points and 5 rebounds (17 PRA, 16 PR) off the bench.
Oklahoma City’s stars certainly did their bit. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was his usual elite self with 39 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists, totalling 46 PRA and 43 PR, while also hitting 2 triples and nabbing a steal. Chet Holmgren was enormous defensively with 5 blocks and 5 combined steals/blocks, and also delivered 14 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists (27 PRA, 25 PR).
Aaron Wiggins and Ajay Mitchell provided valuable support – Wiggins finished with 18 points, 6 boards and 1 assist (25 PRA, 24 PR), while Mitchell had 15 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists (21 PRA, 19 PR).
In a two-point game, Miami’s extra bit of balance across the rotation – and Adebayo’s all-court dominance – tipped the scales just enough in their favour.
Charlotte Hornets vs Golden State Warriors
Golden State turned on the style at home, rolling past Charlotte 136–116. The Warriors set the tone with a 39–28 first quarter and kept the pressure on, winning every period and stretching the lead to 12 by half-time (69–57) and 20 by the final buzzer.
It was a true ensemble performance from the Dubs. De’Anthony Melton was superb, finishing with 24 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists, giving him 33 PRA and 30 PR. He was hot from deep as well, knocking down 3 threes.
Draymond Green filled the box score in vintage fashion: 20 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists for 29 PRA and 23 PR, plus 4 made threes and 2 steals + 0 blocks in the steals/blocks department. Brandin Podziemski added 16 points, 6 boards and 7 assists (29 PRA, 22 PR), while young wing Will Richard chipped in 11 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists (22 PRA, 17 PR).
Stephen Curry didn’t need to put up a massive scoring total in this one, but still contributed 14 points, 3 rebounds and 5 assists (22 PRA, 17 PR) and hit 2 triples. Off the bench, Buddy Hield (14 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist – 18 PRA) and Quinten Post (7 points, 7 boards, 2 assists – 16 PRA) rounded out a deep, productive rotation.
For Charlotte, Brandon Miller led the way with 28 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists (39 PRA, 34 PR), including 6 three-pointers. Rookie Kon Knueppel had a big night as well with 24 points, 11 rebounds and 2 assists (37 PRA, 35 PR) and 4 made threes. Collin Sexton added 17 points, 3 boards and 3 assists (23 PRA, 20 PR).
As strong as Miller and Knueppel were, Charlotte couldn’t match Golden State’s sheer volume of contributors. With seven Warriors finishing in double-digit PRA and the team hitting consistently from deep, the Hornets were always chasing.
Washington Wizards vs Denver Nuggets
Denver came from behind in the second half to defeat Washington 121–115. The Wizards led 63–62 at the half after a strong 34-point second quarter, but Denver finished with a 59–52 edge over the final two quarters to clinch the win.
Jamal Murray was the star of the show. He erupted for 42 points, 3 rebounds and 6 assists, ending with a monster 51 PRA and 45 PR. He was deadly from outside with 5 three-pointers, and added 2 steals and 2 blocks for 4 stocks, plus a game-high 9 tos + steals + blocks combined.
Tim Hardaway Jr. provided crucial scoring support with 30 points, 2 rebounds and 0 assists (32 PRA, 32 PR), including 5 threes. Aaron Gordon had a strong all-round performance: just 8 points, but a huge 10 rebounds and 11 assists for a 29 PRA line and 21 RA. Peyton Watson chipped in 21 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists (28 PRA, 26 PR) with some timely buckets.
Washington spread its production more evenly. Kyshawn George was their standout with 29 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists, finishing with 41 PRA and 34 PR, plus 5 threes, 1 steal and 3 blocks (for 4 steals/blocks and 5 total tos+stocks). Khris Middleton was steady with 16 points, 7 boards and 4 assists (27 PRA, 23 PR), and Justin Champagnie delivered 13 points, 9 rebounds and 1 assist (23 PRA, 22 PR), along with 3 steals.
Big man Alexandre Sarr also impressed with 16 points, 8 rebounds and 1 assist (25 PRA, 24 PR). In the end, though, Murray’s 42-point masterpiece and the supporting punch from Hardaway Jr. proved just enough to overturn the Wizards’ narrow half-time lead.
Los Angeles Lakers vs Portland Trail Blazers
The Lakers capped off the day with a high-scoring win over Portland, taking it 132–116. Los Angeles jumped out early with a 40–27 first quarter and led 71–61 at the half. They maintained control after the break, winning both the third and fourth quarters to keep Portland at arm’s length.
For the Blazers, it was a genuinely balanced offensive performance with multiple players making strong contributions. Shaedon Sharpe led the way, dropping 25 points, 3 rebounds and 4 assists for 32 PRA and 28 PR, and knocking down 4 three-pointers. He also added 2 steals, underlining his two-way potential.
Caleb Love was hugely influential with 22 points, 1 rebound and 7 assists (30 PRA, 23 PR), complemented by 4 threes and 2 steals. Big man Donovan Clingan was a force inside, posting 18 points, 11 rebounds and 4 assists for 33 PRA and 29 PR, as well as solid rim protection numbers in the steals/blocks metrics.
Jerami Grant added 22 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists (27 PRA, 25 PR), while Donovan Clingan and Robert Williams III (8 points, 6 boards – 14 PR) controlled the glass. Sidy Cissoko (14 points, 5 rebounds – 19 PRA) and Toumani Camara (9 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist – 12 PRA) rounded out a well-spread Blazers box score.
For the Lakers, LeBron James again led from the front with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 8 assists – just shy of a triple-double – for 37 PRA and 29 PR. He also added 1 steal and 2 blocks for a total of 3 steals/blocks, and knocked down 1 three-pointer.
Marcus Smart had a huge night as well, finishing with 25 points, 2 rebounds and 0 assists (27 PRA, 27 PR) and hitting 4 threes, while Drew Timme gave the Lakers vital frontcourt scoring with 21 points, 2 rebounds and 4 assists (27 PRA, 23 PR). Maxi Kleber (11 points, 5 boards, 1 assist – 17 PRA) and Rui Hachimura (11 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist – 13 PRA) added important bench production.
Despite strong Blazers individual numbers from Sharpe, Love and Clingan, the Lakers’ early scoring burst and the all-round brilliance of LeBron and Smart ensured they stayed in control from start to finish.
