NBA main spread versus an alternate spread

Different point spreads are different bets, even when both are offered on the same game.

Label the threshold

A team at +4.5 can lose by four points and cover; at +2.5, a three- or four-point loss does not cover. The selected team, plus or minus sign and spread number all define the wager. A sportsbook may present an alternate spread with a larger payout, but it has a different result threshold from the main line.

Keep the comparison rows exact

Compare Sportsbook A Team A +4.5 only with other Team A +4.5 quotes for the same game and period. Do not treat +2.5 at +120 as the best price for +4.5 at −110. If the feed does not identify an alternate market reliably, avoid claiming alternate-spread coverage from a generic spread row.

Check the payout after the line

American odds describe return. A +120 quote wins $120 profit on a $100 stake; −110 wins about $90.91 profit on a $100 stake. Those numbers can be compared as payouts only after the outcome condition is held constant. Confirm the current sportsbook market before placing any wager.

Worked example

Illustration: Team A loses by three. Team A +4.5 at −110 wins, while Team A +2.5 at +120 loses. The +120 figure cannot be called a better price for the +4.5 selection.
