NBA injury reports and odds: a timestamp checklist

Keep confirmed player status, the game, and a sportsbook quote on the same timeline.

Date the report

Use the official NBA injury report or the team's official update to identify the player status, affected game and publication time. A player listed as questionable is not confirmed out. The game's tipoff and time zone matter because reports and prices can change throughout the day.

Date the quote

To measure a change, preserve the same sportsbook, game, selection, market and point spread or total line at two collection times. Team A −3.5 at −110 and Team A −4.5 at −110 show a spread change even though the American price did not change. A moneyline quote is not a prior observation for a spread quote.

Report only what is observed

A post-report move does not prove that one injury caused it. State the report status and timestamp, quote timestamps, other missing sportsbooks and any changed lines. The live board is for current comparison; a movement study needs a separate prospective sample.

Worked example

Illustration: a report appears at 4 p.m. Eastern. Sportsbook A is recorded at Team A −3.5 (−110) at 3 p.m. and −4.5 (−110) at 5 p.m. The spread moved one point. These observations alone cannot assign the cause.

Illustrative numbers for explaining the calculation. They are not current bookmaker quotes.

Sources and method

The report and prices are hypothetical. This is a documentation method, not a finding about a real player or sportsbook.
