NBA American odds: compare dollar returns
A matched moneyline or point spread price can be translated into stake, profit and total return.
Read negative odds
At −110, a $110 winning stake earns $100 profit and returns $210 including stake. At −105, a $105 winning stake earns the same $100 profit. For an equal $100 stake, the profits are about $90.91 and $95.24 respectively. The −105 offer pays more if both prices refer to the exact same winning bet.
Read positive odds
At +120, a $100 winning stake earns $120 profit and returns $220. A positive sign on a price is distinct from the plus sign on a point spread. Team A +4.5 at +120 combines a spread threshold with a payout; record both and never reduce it to a single positive number.
Hold the market constant
Before calculating a difference, check the NBA game, sportsbook jurisdiction, selection, market and line. A moneyline quote and a spread quote can both name Team A but settle differently. Capture times and current sportsbook availability remain important even when the arithmetic is correct.
Worked example
Illustration: at an equal $100 stake, Team A −3.5 at −110 pays $190.91 gross on a win, while the identical −3.5 at −105 pays $195.24 gross. The $4.33 difference disappears if the spreads or settlement periods differ.
Illustrative numbers for explaining the calculation. They are not current bookmaker quotes.
Sources and method
Prices and game are hypothetical. Dollar figures are rounded to cents using standard American odds conversion; no NBA outcome probability is estimated.
